Ozonolysis results in breaking of double bond and insertion of oxygen atom in its place.

The reductive ozonolysis forms aldehydes and ketones depending upon the nature of the double bond.

In the present case, 2-methylpent-2-ene has a 2 methyl groups attached to DB on one side and a CH group on the other,

hence it will form Acetone and Propionaldehyde.

(CH3)2=CH-CH2-CH3 + O3--------> CH3-CO-CH3 + CH3-CH2-CHO

Ketone and Aldehyde

Explanation:

  • Ozonolysis of 2-Methyl pent-2-ene will give both aldehyde as well as ketone.
  • In primary step an ozonide is formed.
  • In second step, after the formation of ozonide hydrolysis occurs.
  • Hydrolysis of ozonide leads to formation of one molecule of ketone(acetone) and another molecule of aldehyde(propanal)
