Solution :

Given,

P(3, a) is the midpoint of AB

A = (4, 7) and B = (2, 1)

Midpoint = (x1 + x2/2, y1 + y2/2)

(3, a) = [(4 + 2)/2 , (7 + 1)/2]

As the points are equal, co-ordinates are also equal.

(7+1)/2 = a

8/2 = a

a = 4
