Answer:

5 (a). New Mean = 10

5 (b). Omitted number = 26

Step-by-step explanation:

(a). Given, there are 16 numbers

Mean = 8.

Let their sum be x.

\text{So, Mean = }\frac{x}{16} =8\\\\\implies x = 128

If 2 is added to each number then the  sum increases by 16 × 2 = 32.

So, new sum will be x + 32 = 128 + 32

                                            = 160

\text{Therefore, New Mean = }\frac{160}{16} =10

So, the required new mean is 10.

(b).  The mean of 5 numbers = 18

Let sum of 5 numbers be x

\text{Mean = }\frac{\text{sum of observations}}{\text{no of observations}}\\\\=\frac{x}{5}=18\\\\\implies x=5\times 18\\\implies x=90

Now, it is said that if one number is omitted then mean is 16

Let New Sum of 4 numbers be y

Mean=\frac{y}{4}=16\\\\\implies y=4\times 16\\\\\implies y=64

Now, to find omitted number : Subtract sum of 4 numbers from sum sum of 5 numbers

⇒ Omitted Number = x - y

                                = 90 - 64

                                = 26

Therefore, the omitted number is 26
