SOLUTION

GIVEN

P makes a profit of 12% on a transaction.Had he bought the article at 10% less and sold it for 4% less

TO DETERMINE

The percent his profit percentage would have increased

EVALUATION

Let original cost price = Rs 100

Now P makes a profit of 12% on a transaction

∴ Profit = Rs 12

So selling price = Rs ( 100 + 12 ) = Rs 112

If P bought the article at 10% less

Then new cost price = Rs ( 100 - 10 ) = Rs 90

If P sold it for 4% less

So new selling price

 \displaystyle \sf{ =Rs. \:   \:  \: 112 \times  \frac{96}{100} }

 \displaystyle \sf{ =Rs. \:   \:  \: 107.52 }

∴ Profit = Rs ( 107.52 - 90 ) = Rs 17.52

∴ Profit increases by

= Rs ( 17.52 - 12 )

= Rs 5.52

∴ Rate of increase in profit

 \displaystyle \sf{ =  \frac{5.52}{12}  \times 100 \:  \%}

 \displaystyle \sf{ = 46 \:  \%}
