p nitrophenol is a stronger acid than phenol while p-cresol is a weaker acid.discuss

P nitrophenol is more acidic because NO2 shows -I effect and -I effect is directly proportional to acidic character so it is more acidic than phenol.
But in p cresol CH3 group is attached which shows +I effect and it is inversely proportional to acidic character soo it is less acidic than phenol.

-NO2 group being electron withdrawing group, decreases electron density on oxygen O-H group thus making the release of H+ easier hance increasing the acidify of phenol. -CH3 group increases the electron density oxygen atom thus decreasing aciditu than phenol
