Correct Question

p+q = 1 and pq = - 20 . what are the values of p and q.

Given :-

p+q = 1 ---- (i)

pq = -20

=> p = -20/q

Substitute the value of p in equation (i)

p+q = 1

=> -20/q + q = 1

=> -20+q²/q = 1

=> -20 + q² = q

=> q²-q-20 = 0

=> q²-5q+4q-20 = 0

=> q(q-5)+4(q-5) = 0

=> (q-5) (q+4) = 0

Either

q = 5

or

q = -4

Substitute the both value of q in equation (i)

p+q = 1

p+5 = 1

p = -4

or

p + q = 1

p-4 = 1

p = 5
