Question :- P, Q and R are three quantities.P varies directly with the sum of Q and R. If both Q and R decrease by 1, find the change in P.

A) no change

B) an decrease of 2

C) an increase of 2

D) cannot be determined .

Solution :-

given that,

→ P varies directly with the sum of Q and R .

so,

→ P ∝ (Q + R)

→ P = k•(Q + R) { where k is a constant term. }

now, given that,

  • Both Q and R are decreased by 1.

we know that,

  • In direct proportion, both x and y increases or decreases together in such a manner that the ratio of their corresponding value remains constant.

then,

→ P = k•(Q - 1 + R - 1)

→ P = {k•(Q + R)} - 2

→ P = (P - 2) . (B) (Ans.)

Hence, P is decreased by 2.
