Given:

P, Q and R play football. The ratio of the number of goals by 'P' to the number of goals by 'Q' and the  ratio of the number of goals by 'Q' to the number of goals by 'R' is each 3:2

They scored 342 goals in  total in the matches played in a year.

To find:

How many goals did 'P' score?

Solution:

According to the question, we have

\frac{P}{Q} = \frac{Q}{R} = \frac{3}{2}

i.e.,

P     :        Q   :      R

3     :        2

                3      :     2

(3×3)  :   (2×3)   :   (2×2)

 9       :     6      :    4

∴ The ratio of no. of goals by P, Q & R are = 9 : 6 : 4

Let's assume,

"9x" → No. of goals by P

"6x" → No. of goals by Q

"4x" → No. of goals by R

We have,

Total no. of goals scored by P, Q & R in the matches played in a year = 342

⇒ 9x + 6x + 4x = 342

⇒ 19x = 342

⇒ x = \frac{342}{19}

x = 18

P's score = 9x = 9 × 18 = 162

Thus, \boxed{\bold{P\:scored\: \underline{162}\:goals\:in\:the\:football\:match}}.
