Answer:

We have to keep the time taken by both of them after both of them have started same for this problem.

The concept is that after one hour of starting of P, there will be a certain time at which both P and Q meets together.

Now, the expression of time for both of them is given as:

For P:    (40-X)/8 where 40-X is the distance that P will travel and 8 is the speed.

For Q: (48-X)/12 where 48-X is the distance that Q will travel and 12 is the speed.

Note that X is the distance that will be left for both of them to cover when they meet together.

So, keeping (40-X)/8 = (48-X)/12

we get the solution as X = 24

So, P will cover 16 Km and Q will cover 24 Km from the time point, they both start. Actually, in this question, P has already covered 8 Km in one hr, when Q has started, so for P: 8 + 16 and for Q 24 is same and they meet at 24 Km from the begining or at a point when 24 Km distance is left for both of them to travel.
