when a trivalent (ex boron,aluminium) is added to a germanium or silicon crystal it replaces one of the germanium or silicon atom. its three valence electrons form covalent bonds with neighbouring three Ge or Si atoms while the fourth valence electron of Ge or Si is not able to form the bond. Thus there remains a hole(an empty space) on one side of the impurity atom.
