Given :  P(x) = x⁴  - 2x³  +  kx  - 4   dividing by x - 1 leaves remainder 0

To find :  Value of k

Solution:

P(x) = x⁴  - 2x³  +  kx  - 4

When divided by x - 1 leaves remainder 0

=> x - 1 is a factor => x = 1   is one of the root/zero

=> P(1) =  0

=> 1⁴ - 2(1)³ + k(1)   - 4  = 0

=> 1 - 2  + k  - 4 = 0

=> k - 5  = 0

=> k  = 5

Value of k  = 5

x⁴  - 2x³  + 5x  - 4   = (x - 1)(x³ - x² - x  + 4)
