Answer:

Shivaji's mavlas (soldiers in Shivaji's army were called mavlas) were skilled climbers. It was a tradition that developed to help Shivaji's troops catch the enemy off guard in guerrilla warfare.

Shivaji was the founder of the Maratha Empire in the Indian subcontinent. Shivaji's early life is a subject of great interest in popular culture in India, particularly in Maharashtra where he spent most of his life.

At the time of his birth, both his father Shahaji and mother Jijabai's family were serving the Sultanate of Ahmednagar in military and administrative capacities. However, they later transferred their allegiance to the Mughal Empire and Bijapur Sultanate at different times.

As a servant of Bijapur, Shahaji was sent to the southern Deccan after 1636 and did not see Shivaji for several years. Shivaji and his mother stayed in Pune in the north Deccan, where Shahaji's subordinate, Dadoji Kondadeo, administered the family's jagir (feudal land grant) on Shivaji's behalf.

As a teenager, Shivaji began acting independently of the Bijapur government against the advice of Shahaji and Doji. He conquered several hill forts at the expense of other Bijapur vassals at the age of 15.

After Dadoji died in 1647, Shivaji took control of his father's jagir in the Pune region and removed local challenges to his authority. Then he invaded the northern Konkan region and invaded the territory of the Siddis of Janjira.

He later attempted to ally with the Mughals against Bijapur and ended up fighting these two powers to establish a kingdom that would become the Maratha Empire.
