जगभरात वापरण्यात येणार्‍या एकूण पाण्यापैकी ६९ टक्के पाणी शेतीसाठी वापरले जाते. १९६० सालाच्या तुलनेत २००० साली पाण्याचा वापर दुप्पट वाढला. पाण्याच्या वापरात दिवसेंदिवस वाढ होत आहे. पाण्याची बचत केली नाही तर एकदिवस पाणी संपू शकते. प्रत्येकाला केवळ पिण्यासाठीच नव्हे तर जगण्यासाठी आवश्यक असलेले धान्य पिकविण्यासाठीही पाण्याची गरज आहे. त्यामुळे प्रत्येकाने पाण्याची बचत करणे काळाची गरज आहे. पाण्याच्या गैरवापरामुळे मनुष्याच्या अस्तित्वाला उपयुक्त ठरणारे मासे आणि इतर जलचरांना धोका निर्माण होत आहे. तसेच पाण्याच्या बचतीमुळे पृथ्वीचा समतोल साधला जातो.
