Though ice is a solid, it has large number of empty spaces between its particles. These spaces are larger as compared to the spaces present between the particles of water, giving ice a cage like structure. Thus, due to the empty spaces the volume of ice is greater than same mass of water. Hence, the density (mass per unit volume) of ice is less than that of water. A substance with lower density than water floats on the surface of water. Therefore, ice floats on water. Ice can be converted to water by the process of heating.

Ice and boiling water can exist at same temperature. This is termed as triple point of water. The temperature and pressure at which the three phases of a substance are in equilibrium. The triple point of water, 273.16 K at a pressure of 611.2 Pa, is the basis of the definition of the kelvin.

*The density of ice is 0.917 gcm-3 while that of water is 1 gcm-3.
