NEURON :

• It is the structural and functional unit of the nervous system.

• The nervous system consists of nerves which in turn consists of a number of neurons.

A neuron has 2 main parts:

• Cyton/Cell body

• Axon

Cyton:

• It is also known as the cell body of the neuron.

• It consists of thin projections known as dendrites which in turn connect with the other neurons.

• The cyton is also responsible for production of molecules for impulse transmission.

Axon:

• It is the elongated part of a neuron.

• The axons in majority of the nerves are covered with the myelin sheath. The myelin sheath act as insulators.

• The axon undergoes bifurcation to form axon terminals which in turn form the nerve endings and the synaptic knobs (or bulbs).
