NEURON :
- It is the structural and functional unit of the nervous system.
- The nervous system consists of nerves which in turn consists of a number of neurons.
A neuron has 2 main parts:
- Cyton/Cell body
- Axon
Cyton:
- It is also known as the cell body of the neuron.
- It consists of thin projections known as dendrites which in turn connect with the other neurons.
- The cyton is also responsible for production of molecules for impulse transmission.
Axon:
- It is the elongated part of a neuron.
- The axons in majority of the nerves are covered with the myelin sheath. The myelin sheath act as insulators.
- The axon undergoes bifurcation to form axon terminals which in turn form the nerve endings and the synaptic knobs (or bulbs).
