पश्चिमी घाट प्रायद्वीपीय पठार के पश्चिमी भाग पर गुजरात और महाराष्ट्र की सीमा से शुरू होती है और महाराष्ट्र, गोवा, कर्नाटक, तमिलनाडु तथा केरल से होते हुए कन्याकुमारी में समाप्त हो जाती है। वहीं पूर्वी घाट प्रायद्वीपीय पठार के पूर्वी भाग पर ओडिशा से तमिलनाडु तक फैला हुआ है।
