Explanation:
In “Packing for the Future: Instructions”, written by Lorna Crozier, the author states wisely by proposing three advices that future is full of challenges, people need to prepare for their futures. First, “There may be water”, “There may be stones”, “There may be high places”(Line4-6), these all represent the different situations and hardships people might face in the future. Hence, the author suggests, “Take the thickest socks” (Line1), which means people need to prepare sufficiently when they leave for future. The second suggestion that author proposes is bringing the small stuffs like key and photograph when people leave far away from home. “Perhaps the key you’ve kept tough it doesn’t fit any lock you know…a ball of string to lead you out...
Explanation:
The poet suggests that her child should take a thick pair of homemade socks, a leather satchel, a velvet bag, an old tin box, a photograph, and a ball of string. These items appear quite unique. Perhaps the items mentioned would be a comfort to remind the traveler of home in case loneliness.
Certain elements of the poem contain traces of a fairy tale. Some of these elements are the descriptions of the setting, which include water, stones, high places, open fields, winds; these all give a sense of an outdoor atmosphere, which is often a crucial in fairy tales. The long journey with many adventures to come also takes the tone of a fairy tale.
I think the poet is saying “leave room for sadness” because you have to be aware that everything on your trip won’t be perfect. Even if the trip is your dream you must be aware that there are still times of sorrow and disappointment.
She says not to mistrust anyone who offers you a songbird’s feather, water from a well, or something that has been mended twice. I think she chooses these because there isn’t much chance in someone offering you these items. By saying not to mistrust these few people, she is basically telling her child to trust no one.
“Always travel lighter / than the heart”. Once again I interpret these lines as an air of caution. It is stating that you should carry less baggage, because your heart will be full of concerns of possible dangers.
