Answer:

The glassware is wrapped with straw especially during transportation. This is important in reducing the force at which the glasses knock each other. Since the straws have a softer surface, the rate of change in momentum is thus lowered in case of bumps and hence the force generated is low. This ensures that the glassware does not break while being transported.

The glasswares are very brittle.  The empty space in the middle of the glassware responds to vibrations and can help the glass break.   Glass breaks easily when it collides against heavier items.  When many items are mixed and packed, it is safer to pack glassware with thick layers of straw.

A thick layer of Straw absorbs external shock or force, and gets deformed and compressed.  It absorbs the compressive force.  When pressure is released, the straw does not return back to its original position.  Also, the external pressure is passed on to the glassware, only in small quantities.

Also, by wrapping straw around the glassware, the surface area which absorbs the external pressure is increased.  The pressure on glassware becomes uniform and spread over a wide area.  So the glassware does not break.
