TOPIC:- TENSE CHANGE

Required answer:-

  • Given - The storm destroyed the sandcastle that we _____ (build).
  • Past perfect - The storm destroyed the sandcastle that we had built.

Explanation:-

Since past perfect tense tells us about an activity which had been completed in the past, it is generally formed in the structure: Subject + had + past participle form of verb + object. Now, as per our question, we have been given the verb which has to be inserted, i.e., "build". It has to be inserted at the very end of the sentence. So, the verb should be formed as "had built". On inserting this in the respective place, we got the answer. \:

Additional information:-

Past tense is divided into four kinds.

  • Past indefinite tense
  • Past progressive tense
  • Past perfect tense
  • Past perfect progressive tense

We've already seen about past perfect tense. So, let us know about the other three kinds, now.

Past indefinite tense - This is simply used to talk about something in past or past events. It forms in the structure: Subject + verb 2 + object. For example, She walked to the forest.

Past progressive tense - This tense is used to talk about some actions which was ongoing in the past. It forms in the structure: Subject + was/were + verb + ing + object. For example, I was writing my notes for two hours.

Past perfect progressive tense - This tense is used talk about an action which was in progress and was still continuing over another action in the past. It forms in the structure: Subject + had + been + verb + ing + object. For example, I had been studying for an hour.
