The French society was organised on the basis of the old regimes, which refers to the establishment of monarchs and practise of system of estates.
The French society was divided into 3 estates :
1st Estate (Clergy) - It includes the church officials. It has various power to collect tax from the third estate. They enjoy certain privilages by birth.
They do not have to pay taxes.
2nd Estate (Nobility) - It includes the members of royal council and ministers. They also not have to pay taxes.
3rd Estate - It includes workers, artisians, labours, lawyers etc. They do not have privilages by birth. They have to pay taxes directly or indirectly. They were treated unfairly. They comprised a majority of population.
