The size of the molecule, the shape of the molecule and a charge of the moleculedetermine how a molecule (eg protein, DNA) moves during electrophoresis. Polyacrylamide gels have a rather small range of separation, but have very high resolving power. Polyacrylamide is used to separate fragments less than 500 bp.
