Given info : The density of conduction electrons in a wire is 10²² /m³. if radius of wire is 0.6mm and carrying a current of 2 A.
To find : what will be the average drift velocity ?
solution : drift velocity = i/neA
where i is current through conductor,
n is no of electrons per unit volume,
A is cross sectional area,
e is charge on each electron.
here e = 1.6 × 10^-19 C, i = 2A , n = 10²² /m³
A = πr² = π(0.6 × 10^-3)² = 3.14 × 0.36 × 10^-6 m²
now, drift velocity = 2/(10²² × 1.6 × 10^-19 × 3.14 × 0.36 × 10^-6)
= 2/(10^-3 × 1.6 × 3.14 × 0.36)
= 1.106 × 10³ m/s
= 1106 m/s
Therefore the average drift velocity would be 1106 m/s (approx).
