The time traveller/narrator saw that what he had taken to be a reddish mass of rock was moving towards him. It was a monstrous crab-like creature with many legs and big claws. It swayed, its long antennae-like craters’ whips and its stalked eyes gleaming on either side of its metallic front. He stared at this sinister apparition crawling towards him; he felt a tickling on his cheek as though a fly had lighted there. He tried to brush it away but in a moment it returned and almost immediately came another by his ear. It was drawn swiftly out of his hand. He turned and saw that he had grasped the antenna of another monster crab that stood just behind him. Its mouth was all alive with appetite, its evil eyes were wriggling on their stalks and its vast claws smeared with slime. In a moment, his hand was on the lever and he had placed a month between himself and the monsters. But he was still on the same beach and he saw them distinctly as he stopped. Dozens of them seemed to be crawling here and there in the sombre light among the intense green.
