Paheli prepared a blue coloured solution of copper sulphate in beaker A and placed an iron nail in it. Boojho prepared a yellowish green solution of ferrous sulphate in beaker B and placed a copper wire in it. What changes will they observe in the two beakers after an hour? Write the chemical equations involved in the reactions.

Answer:

We know, from metal reactivity series, that iron is more reactive than copper. Therefore, iron can displace copper but copper cannot displace iron. Hence, in the first case, iron will replace copper in copper sulphate to form iron sulphate. A brown deposit is seen on the iron nail which is actually deposited copper. The reaction which takes place in the first case is:

Fe + CuSO4 = FeSO4 + Cu

In second case however, no reaction will take place.
