Given :- Pair of tangents to be drawn from an external point which is at a distance of 5cm from the circle of

radius 4cm. Then the distance from the centre of the circle to the external point is ?

Solution :-

we know that, tangents make 90° angle at centre with radius .

so, using pythagoras theorem we get,

→ (Distance from the centre of the circle to the external point)² = (radius)² + (distance of external point from circle)²

→ D² = 4² + 5²

→ D = √(16 + 25)

→ D = √41 cm (Ans.)

Hence, the distance from the centre of the circle to the external point is √41 cm .
