●Every government in the world now sees terrorism as its biggest challenge, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday, pointing out that while India repeatedly raised the issue, many in the world did not take the threat seriously until a few years ago.
“We in India are facing a lot for the last 40 years on account of terrorism,” the prime minister said on his monthly Mann Ki Baat radio show, which also marked the ninth anniversary of the Mumbai terrorist attacks.
“Thousands of our innocent people have lost their lives,” the prime minister said, pointing out that terrorism has now become a global threat.

Terrorism is an act of repeated violence against the population or spread threat in the people mind. Terror means the unlawful use of violence intended to create terror for achieving religious, economic, political, or ideological goals and ignoring the safety of human life.

According to the report of global terrorism index 2014, India was ranked among the top ten countries greatly affected by terrorism.

Causes of terrorism in India

In India, there are many causes of terrorism. First, we can say that there are political reasons for the growth of terrorism in India. We can see that this is primarily in the north-east region where the government have failed to control and manage large-scale illegal Muslim immigration from Bangladesh.

Causes of economic terrorism in India. In this rural unemployment, exploitation of landless labourers by those who own land and lack of land reforms. Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh are the states which are affected by this causes. The absence of land reforms, rural unemployment, exploitation of landless labourers by landowners, economic grievances and perceptions of gross social injustice in these states have given rise to ideological terrorist groups such as the various Marxist/Maoist groups waging a war against the irrespective state government.

Lastly, religious causes also help to terrorism in India because of growth of Sikh militancy in Punjab for the creation of an independent Sikh nation called Khalistan. In the state of Jammu and Kashmir, the dream of a separate Kashmir nation has drawn many Muslim Organizations together against India. The Pakistan has been doing the continuous efforts to harm religious polarization in the state. In Jammu and Kashmir, there is an unmistakable religious angle to terrorism. There are many pro-active terrorist organizations such as Jaish-e-Mohammad and Hizbul Mujahideen. Terrorist and insurgent groups in India receive funding from different sources such as Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI); religious, fundamentalist and pan-Islamic jihadi organizations in Pakistan; ostensibly charitable organizations in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia; the mafia group led by Dawood Ibrahim who operates from Karachi, Pakistan.

Sometimes, a terrorist gets ransom payments for releasing hostages, and collect contributions-voluntary or forced from the people staying in the area where they operate Narcotics smuggling is another source of funding for terrorist organizations and they use informal hawala channel to transmit funds.

Major Terrorist Attacks in India

A terrorist has struck time and again in India. Some of such incidents are as follows:

1985 bombing of Air India flight from Canada to India, which killed all 329 people on board.2001 Attack on Indian Parliament on 13th December 2001, in which 9 policemen and parliament staff were killed, besides all five terrorists who were identified as Pakistani.2005 Delhi bombings on 29th October 2005, which killed more than 60 people and other 200 peoples were injured.2006 Varanasi Bombings in which it has been reported that 15 people have been killed and other 101 peoples were injured.2006 Mumbai Attack when two five star hotels, a landmark train station, and a Jewish Chabad house in south

Insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir: An insurgency in Kashmir has been a cause for heightened tensions. India has also accused Pakistan-backed militant groups of executing several terrorist attacks across India.

Siachen conflict: In 1984, India launched Operation Meghdoot capturing all of the Siachen Glacier. Further clashes erupted in the glacial area in 1985, 1987 and 1995 as Pakistan sought, without success, to oust India from its stronghold.[11][48]

Sir Creek: The dispute lies in the interpretation of the maritime boundary line between Kutch and Sindh. Before India's independence, the provincial region was a part of Bombay Presidency of British India. After India's independence in 1947, Sindh became a part of Pakistan while Kutch became a part of India. Pakistan lays claim to the entire creek as per paras 9 and 10 of the Bombay Government Resolution of 1914[49] signed between the then Government of Sindh and Rao Maharaj of Kutch.[50]

India–Pakistan maritime trespassing: frequent trespassing and violation of respective national territorial waters of India and Pakistan in peacetime occurs commonly by Pakistani and Indian fishermen operating along the coastline of the Indian state of Gujarat and the Pakistani province of Sindh. Most violations occur due to the absence of a physical boundary and lack of navigational tools for small fishermen. Hundreds of fishermen are arrested by the Coast Guards of both nations, but obtaining their release is difficult and long-winded owing to the hostile relations between the two nations.

Insurgency in Balochistan: An insurgency in Balochistan province of Pakistan has also caused tensions recently. Pakistan has accused India of causing the insurgency with the help of ousted Baloch leaders, militant groups and terrorist organizations like the Balochistan Liberation Army. According to Pakistani Officials these militants are trained in neighboring Afghanistan. In 2016, Pakistan alleged that an Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav was arrested by Pakistani forces during a counter-intelligence operation in Balochistan.
