Given:

  • P and Q are partners in a firm, sharing profits and losses in the ratio 4:1.
  • P surrenders 1/6 from his share and Q surrenders 1/4 of his share in favour of the new partner, R.

To find: R's share.

Answer:

  • P's old share = 4/5
  • Q's old share = 1/5

  • From P, R gets 1/6.
  • From Q, R gets 1/5 × 1/4 = 1/20.

  • R's share = Sacrifice by P + Sacrifice by Q

Calculation of the new profit-sharing ratio:

New share = Old share - Sacrifice made

For P:

  • New share = 4/5 - 1/6 = (24 - 5)/30 = 19/30, or 190/300

For Q:

  • New share = 1/5 - 1/20 = (20 - 5)/100 = 15/100, or 45/300

For R:

  • New share = 1/6 + 1/20 = (20 + 6)/120 = 26/120, or 65/300

The new profit-sharing ratio is 190:45:65 or 38:9:13 and R's share is (C) 13/60.
