Answer:

The capital city of Goa, Panjim, is likely to experience wet weather conditions along with the chances of thunderstorms for the coming week, as south west monsoon heads north taking many regions in to its ambit.

The IMD’s city weather forecast for Panjim indicates that the region is likely to experience an overcast sky with a few spells of rain or thundershowers. This trend will further progress into one or two spells of rains with generally cloudy sky over the weekend.

The regional met department in Goa also expects most places across north and south Goa to receive ‘moderate to heavy rainfall’ at a few places. This trend is likely to continue over the coming few days.

The TWC met team has also forecast heavy rain and thunderstorms along the western coast, including Goa, owing to the incursion of westerly humid winds from the Arabian Sea into the region.

According to the Customised Rainfall Information System (CRIS), Goa has received 244mm of rainfall since June 1, 2019, less than half of the average rainfall of 550mm it receives during this time of the year.

Goa and the neighbouring regions had received considerable amount of rainfall two weeks ago due to the formation of cyclone Vayu in the Arabian Sea. However, south-west monsoons which were about to hit Goa took a backseat due to the prevalence of the ‘Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm’.

As the storm dissipated after hitting Gujarat as a low pressure area a few days ago, Monsoon currents have regained their lost strength and have started to cover the regions along the western coast of India and are heading north.

Meanwhile, temperatures in Panjim had risen beyond their average level during the month of May, but, the arrival of showers has lowered the temperatures. Day time temperatures in Goa are at 28°C, while night time temperatures fall a few notches to 23°C. However, higher relative humidity of 98% still makes the place hot and sultry.
