Papaverine is a non-narcotic alkaloid found only in the latex of the opium poppy, and only in the latex of the opium poppy. It is often refined out of the opiates for which latex is collected, therefore its presence in a sample is strong prima facie proof that the carrier from whom the sample was taken was involved in the bulk cultivation of poppies or the collection and handling of their latex. We describe a method for detecting papaverine at low concentrations using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and microfluidics, and show that its SERS spectrum has unique spectroscopic properties that allow it to be detected at low quantities among usual opioids.
