Environment can be defined as the surroundings that we live in and where the interaction between the abiotic and biotic components takes place.

  • The natural environment or natural world includes all living and non-living things that occur naturally, which means not artificial in this case. The term is often applied to the earth or parts of the earth.
  • The non-living part of the environment consists of three main parts: the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, and the lithosphere.
  • The atmosphere is the air - the layer of nitrogen, oxygen and other gases that surrounds the Earth.
  • All oceans and other bodies of water on Earth make up the hydrosphere.
  • The hydrosphere includes water in the air, as in clouds.
  • The lithosphere consists of the outer layer of the Earth.
  • It consists of the crust of the upper mantle and the solid outermost layer.
  • The lithosphere also includes the rocks and soil on the Earth's surface.
  • People, animals, plants and all other living things depend on the non-living parts of the environment to survive.
  • The part of the environment where life exists is called the biosphere.
