The value of Current Affairs in Civil Service Examinations is enormous. This is the most critical part of both Prelims and Mains Exam. Thermopolium: It means hot drinks counter in Latin. Researchers have recently unearthed a thermopolium in the Roman empire town of Pompeii which is one of the world’s largest and most significant archaeological sites currently.
The snack food counter called the thermopolium at the Pompeii archaeological park’s Regio V was partially excavated in 2019. It was found complete with an image of a Nereid riding a sea-horse, decorative still-life frescoes, food residues, animal’s bones and victims who died during the volcanic eruption of 79 CE.
It is also the first time an entire thermopolium has been excavated, complete with pateras, or bronze drinking bowls, ceramic jars used for cooking stews and soups, wine flasks etc.
The find is of great significant as it shows the variety of food consumed by the residents of the town. Traces of pork, snails, beef and fish have been found in the containers of the stall.
Pompeii: Pompeii is a vast archaeological site in southern Italy’s Campania region, near the coast of the Bay of Naples. It was once a thriving and sophisticated Roman city. It was buried under meters of ash and pumice after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. over 2000 years ago. Around 2000 to 15000 people were killed.
Archeologists continue to make discoveries till now.

History: The art of making Monpa handmade paper originated over 1000 years ago. Gradually the art became an integral part of local custom and culture in Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh. This handmade paper was a major source of livelihood for the locals.
It is a fine-textured handmade paper. It is called Mon Shugu in the local dialect and is integral to the vibrant culture of the local tribes in Tawang.
The Monpa handmade paper will be made from the bark of a local tree called Shugu Sheng, which has medicinal values too.
The paper has great historic and religious significance as it is used for writing Buddhist scriptures and hymns in monasteries. These papers were being sold in the countries like Japan, Thailand, Bhutan and Tibet as paper making industry did not exist in these countries but the local sector gradually declined as the indigenous handmade paper was taken over by inferior Chinese paper.
Kumhar Sashaktikaran Yojana: It is an initiative of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) for the empowerment of the potter’s community in the remotest of locations in the country. The program reaches out to the potters in Maharashtra, J&K, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Telangana Bihar and Assam.
