Answer:

I really envy My grandfather!!! A lot

So many reasons for this…

1.He was the youngest in 4 brothers and 4 sisters(born in 1940s)

2.All his brothers were a father figure to him and chose to be barbers to educate him. He was the first person in lower castes to get educated in the whole district. High borns used to make way when someone of our caste crossed the road.

3.His sister in laws loved him like their own son, they followed their husbands in making him educated without questioning future of their own kids.

4.He did well in education and lived a life where cheating, disloyalty and betrayal almost did not exist.A very respectful and calm life.He did Msc in Orgainc chemistry around 1960.

5.He helped poor and disregarded untouchability many times as a teacher. His students(all retired now) treated him like God/Guru all their life due to his moral and heroic behavior.

My grandfather thinks giving private tution classes is immoral for a teacher to earn money. It is a method for earning from lazy wealthy students who want to get enough marks in exams to beat poor hardworking students(That time board marks gave government jobs and a life).

He says a teacher should be able give his full heart and labor to his disciples. He recounts giving tuition to not more than 10 students, that too on one condition-that student is extremely laborious and poor, hence has a scope under his private guidance with NO tuition fees on request of child’s parents only.

6.He recounts his students used to carry his luggage as an honor till he was comfortable in train and catching their own train which left station in a few minutes.(In those days, schools were located in different towns as India was not developed.

7.Msc in Organic chemistry was very prestigious that time.he got offers from all over India for jobs. One as a scientist in Kolkata. He rejected them all to become a mere school teacher as he wanted to remain close to his brothers in his village. Also because he believes if he had left them all for a bright secure private life it would be betrayal as a younger brother and that nobody shall invest in their younger brothers and trust them if he had left.

8.He was the only educated person in family that time, instead of following”my life my rules” he continued to give all his salary to his eldest brother (10 years elder than him) as his duty being a younger brother without taking it was a matter of pride.

9He chose my grandmother ,after rejecting many girls, with love at first sight and married her.

10 He lost his father at age of about 2,so her mother was widow for most of his life.During grandfather’s marriage widows were not allowed to attend ceremonies. He rejected the norm at his own marriage which was not that easy that time.He rejected participating in any ceremony on marriage day till his mother was not allowed besides his seat.

11. In our paternal village, almost everyone respects him. At any corner, you can ask anyone” please direct me to DHANJI MATERJI’S HOUSE”.

Many of his students still invite him to their private ceremonies to totally distant places and take full responsibility of his travel.

12 He describes his mother as” almost blind, very strict, bold, harsh and dangerous with a stick if there is any voice in midnight and a very bold lady ready to fight with her very fragile body”.

13 He describes my grandmother as”still the most beautiful, very hardworking, too religious, never gives up,his best friend and energetic bold person and his best decision”.

14.He got 4 children.2 sons having two modern care taking obedient wives who respect him a lot.

15 He is 78 now,a healthy sane scientific person with a very open modern mind living in his old ancestral home in his village with his healthy sane wife without need of care of his sons as his decision. He keeps regular touch with all his grandchildren and children who love and respect him.He is open to all type of discussions like love, relationships, career, politics etc.He says he feels lucky that he does not need sleeping pills and digestion pills to enjoy sound sleeps and enjoy food.
