The Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali are a collection of 196 Indian sutras (aphorisms) on the theory and practice of yoga. The Yoga Sutras were compiled prior to 400 BC by Sage Patanjali who synthesized and organized knowledge about yoga from older traditions.[1][2][3] The Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali was the most translated ancient Indian text in the medieval era, having been translated into about forty Indian languages and two non-Indian languages: Old Javanese and Arabic.[4] David Gordon White points to a period of when the text fell into relative obscurity for nearly 700 years from the 12th to 19th century, and made a comeback in late 19th century due to the efforts of Swami Vivekananda, the Theosophical Society and others. It gained prominence again as a comeback classic in the 20th century.

Sage Patanjali was a great saint, a great scientist, a great psychologist , a great doctor of medicine and a grammarian- all in one- no exaggeration.

the Yoga Sutra- a book on science of yoga is believed to have been written by him , a Mahabhasya or treatise on Sanskrit grammar was also written by him and also a book on Ayurveda- an ancient medicine system of India .

yoga as propounded by Maharshi Patanjali is one of the six orthodox Indian philosophy.

Though yoga is very old science and is being practiced for 5/6 thousand years but it was Maharshi Patanjali who collated , codified the entire yoga practice. He is believed to have been lived some 200 BC to 400 BC roughly 2500 years ago.

commentaries on his classic “"Yoga Sutra” have been written even by Maharshi Ved vyas and Swami Vivekananda.

lots and lot of commentaries are available now a days even modern day yoga proponent Ayangar has also written beautiful commentary on yoga sutra.

Patanjali was himself a realised soul. The techniqueS of mind management suggested by him are amazing. He had studied human mind in such a great detail that whatever theories he proposed are scientifically proved. His entire approach was mind management . In Indian thought everything is permeated by the supreme universal spirit (parmatma or God) of which the individual human spirit ( jivatma) is a part. Patanjali’S work is a systematic and step by step approach as to how individual soul can be united to universal soul ( God).

patanjali yoga is known as astang yoga or (yoga with eight limbs) . It is also called as Raja yoga.
