Importance of Relationships
Relationships are very important in a man’s life. Man takes birth and grows up in an environment of relationships. Father, mother, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, grandparents, friends, wife, husband, son, daughter, etc. are all names of relationships. He enjoys being alive if there is love and care in these relationships. However, if the relationships are tense, devoid of warmth and love, man’s life becomes miserable.
The play 'Dear Departed' focuses on dwindling values of love and warmth from human relationships in the society. Materialism has so much affected the modern man's life that even the respectful relationship between father and daughters has become tainted with it. The lesson highlights this aspect of the tainted relationship with unmatched craftsmanship by weaving a wonderful and absorbing sequence of events.
The protagonist of the play is Abel Merryweather. He comes home drunk and falls asleep deeply. His greedy daughter Mrs. Slater assumes him to be dead and breaks the news to her sister, Mrs. Jordan. Both become absorbed in dividing his things between them.
However, Abel Merryweather stuns them by climbing down the stairs when they are having tea. Soon, he comes to know the entire situation. He teaches them a befitting lesson. He reveals to them his secret plans, which leave them stupefied and stunned. They are left penitent and remorseful for their meanness. Thus the theme of the play quite interesting and edifying!
