this world cup was held in brazil between 12 june to 14 july 2014 . the participating were divided into 8 groups each group of 4 teams each. there were 5 stages of tournament : 1] group stage
2] round of 16
3] quater finals
4] semi finals
5] and finals
each group in first stage i.e. group stage played one match against each other teams of the groups. top 2 teams from each group qualified for round of 16 . second stage onwards the matches were knockout games i.e. only wining team of match will advance to next stage . in this stage each team played only 1 match. same process was followed for advancement up to fifth stage i.e till finals . one extra match was played between losers of semi finals to decide the third and fourth place teams. finally the finals was played between germany and argentina. finally germany became the world champions by defeating argentina with score 1-0 in the final match. during finals , atotal 1501 passes were made of which 1152 were completed. in all 171 goals were scored in the tournment .mario gotze was awarded as man of the match . the colombian team won the 'fifa fair play award ' ,
manuel neuer was awarded with golden gloves , lionel messi with golden ball , and james rodriguez with golden shoes .
