Social Distancing, Hygiene to be Must at WorkplacesNew Delhi: Meetings are being held across ministries and empowered groups as the government is working on a standard operating procedure (SOP) for workplaces that will take effect as and when the nationwide lockdown is eased or lifted.
Although it has yet to be decided whether the lockdown will be eased from April 15, the Centre is framing an SOP for workplaces including factories, manufacturing units and grain markets, with a special focus on manufacturing of essential goods, said people aware of the matter. Recommendations on the SOP are to be submitted to the Union home ministry later this week, they said.
"The idea is to ensure that physical distancing norms and hygiene considerations on account of Covid-19 are strictly followed in every workplace when it resumes functioning, whether in a limited or full-fledged manner. Every workplace will need some redesigning and creation of additional facilities for this," a senior government official involved in the exercise told ET.
"It is very challenging in workplaces which typically have little physical distancing, say, mines or jute mills. What we are trying to do is create clear a SOP on this with some norms that will be mandatory and others that will be in the nature of best practices," said the official.
The basic principle guiding the exercise, according to the official, is to ensure separation and prevent congregation of people as far as possible. "Work from home modules for whoever it is possible, half work shifts, rostered duties - several options are under discussion," he said.
The empowered group dealing with agricultural issues is scheduled to meet this week, according to those in the know, to work out a new format for grain markets and fruit and vegetable mandis to ensure physical distancing norms and that due precautions are taken at every step from loading and unloading of goods to placement of goods and their purchase in the markets.
Several state governments have also begun holding discussions with industry to draw up a 'strategic plan' for the operation of factories and other establishments after the lockdown is lifted. There are also proposals to set up community kitchens within factory establishments.
