Audre Lorde, a nonfiction writer, and poet from Caribbean immigrant parents, writes about how a graduation present became one of her worst holiday of her life. In Lorde essay, she describes some of the horrific moments that she lived during her first trip to Washington D.C on the Fourth of July. Lorde gives several examples, of how her visit to Washington D.C changed her perspective of how she viewed Independence Day. Moreover, she uses techniques such as, titling her essay “The Fourth of July” by using verbal irony, making justice on her own to allow readers to see the negative side of Independence, by expressing her opinion. This are the strongest example of Lorde essay because they show what really meant independence to her. To begin with, Lorde names her essay “The Fourth of July” using verbal irony to allow reader to see the negative experience that she encountered during her first trip to Washington D.C. Lorde describes how a family trip turned out be a terrible and daunting experience instead of being a happy moment. In this essay, the author writes, “the waitress was white, and the counter was white, and the ice-cream I never ate in Washington, D.C., that summer I left childhood was white, and the white heat and the white pavement and the white stone monuments of my first trip to Washington summer made me sick to my stomach for the whole rest
