Dengue is a viral fever transmitted through mosquito bites. The “Aedes” mosquito is the culprit. The disease is very prevalent in tropical countries like ours. Dengue is characterised by sustained high-grade fever, pain around, inside or behind the eyes, nausea and vomiting, abdominal discomfort, Diarrhea, muscle aches and measles-like red rashes all over the body. There are two types of dengue - classic dengue and dengue hemorrhagic. In the first type of dengue recovery is most likely to occur more quickly. But in the second type a decrease in platelet count can result in bleeding, organ failure, and even death. There are no vaccines against dengue. That’s why prevention is crucial. The vector “Aedes” mosquito breeds in stagnant fresh water and rainwater. So we must be vigilant in keeping our household areas clean. We must not allow water to stagnate in flowerpots, vases, tyres and puddles. Besides, we must protect ourselves from mosquito-bites. So we should always wear protective clothing like pants, long sleeves, and socks. We have to use mosquito nets and mosquito-repellent. Above all, we must consult a doctor if any fever persists for days.

Answer:

The Dengue virus is the virus that causes the mosquito-transmitted disease dengue. generally, female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are the carriers of the dengue virus.

These dengue mosquitoes are ubiquitous and typically bite throughout the day (Both inside and outside the house). It has been observed that these mosquitoes are most active during dawn and twilight. Only 6 to 10 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito might the symptoms start to appear. Dengue is a very serious illness and the symptoms include reduced appetite, sickness and diarrhea, nose and gum bleeding, painful joints and muscles and extreme weakness, nausea, and vomiting, etc.

There are currently no known cures or medications that are specifically designed to treat dengue infection. In general, the doctor may advise using paracetamol instead of aspirin to control the pain and fever and to increase fluid intake because aspirin may encourage bleeding. Aspirin should not be administered to children under the age of 12 unless a doctor has specifically prescribed it.

Blood transfusions, intravenous (IV) fluid augmentation and a 24-hour hospital stay are necessary in severe cases. The patient should take adequate bed rest, particularly on days when the fever is at its worst, and take time off from work, school, childcare, or preschool. Dengue patients must remain at home till they are no longer infectious i.e., around 3-5 days.

PREVENTION:

The sole prevention method of dengue is to stay away from mosquito bites.

  • Wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts to hide your skin.
  • use of nets, traps, and insect repellents.
  • To prevent dengue mosquitoes from entering, keep all the doors and windows closed, especially during dawn, dusk, and early evening.

By clearing away all trash and cleaning up any standing water, you can keep your surroundings tidy.
