on Friday evening when a speeding train ran over hundreds of people who were watching Ravana’s effigy going up in flames. At least 61 people were feared dead according to initial estimates with authorities saying that the fatalities could rise.
The tragedy took place at the Joda Fatak area where a large crowd had gathered to watch the fireworks. As the firecrackers went off, the organisers of the Dussehra celebration asked people to move back. A large number of people moved towards the railway tracks. Seven of the 70-odd people injured in a train accident near here were in critical conditions, officials said on Saturday.
At the same time, the Jalandhar-Amritsar DMU was crossing the spot. Police officials said that the revelers could not hear the train approaching because of the loud explosions from the effigy and were run over by the train. Eyewitnesses said the Amritsar-Howrah train had crossed the spot minutes earlier. Had the two trains crossed at the same time, the casualties would have been much higher.

every year on a very festive occasion of dussehra people loved to see the ravan dehan( a big puppet of raavan is burned ). every city organises this on their own scale . and the security and safety of people is also taken seriously.but still accident happens . it is in about amritsar punjab ,, on the night of dussehra dahan lots of crowd gathered to see the dehan . but unfortunately the area was very small .so some people decided to go to the railway track and watch from there .. as the raavan got fired .the train also started coming toward the people, because of the loud sound of crackers. people didn't heared the horn of train . and in a second the train crusshed the people and gone. many people were killed lots of them got serious injury.. and many of them were children .
reason for the accident:
1) the organisers should arrange the bigger ground for peopel.
2) every year the dahan started by 5:30 pm. but this it was started by 6;30pm..because the special guest navjot kaur siddhu arrived late there.. and her speech also continued too long ..
these are the major reasons for the accident.
