I love this painting because of how deep its symbolism takes you.

The essence of it is, as its title plainly suggests, to do with the myth of Icarus, a young boy who, along with his father Daedalus, was trapped in the Labyrinth. Daedalus crafted wings for them to escape with, though Icarus got too close to the sun in flight, only for the wings’ binding wax to melt and him to fall into the sea below, to his death. If you look at the bottom right (excuse the poor quality), you can see him struggling in the water.

Yet the focus of the painting is not on Icarus at all. There’s a lot going on: a ploughman working the field, a shepherd herding his flock, and an angler fishing, all characters mentioned in Ovid’s myth. Ovid, however, described the three as shocked to see Icarus and his father flying over, which they clearly are not in the painting. They don’t even seem to notice. There’s an old Flemish proverb which seems to have had an impact on the work: “And the farmer continued to plough,” (also “the plough doesn’t stop for the dying man”). No matter how important you feel your tragedy is, most will remain oblivious.

Answer:

My favourite painting is the girl with the pearl. Ever since I first saw the painting, it left a strong impression on me. So, please let me describe this great piece of art and explain to you why I like it so much! Girl with a Pearl Earring is an oil painting by Dutch Golden Age painter Johannes Vermeer, dated c. 1665. Going by various names over the centuries, it became known by its present title towards the end of the 20th century after the large pearl earring worn by the girl portrayed there. The work has been in the collection of the Mauritshuis in The Hague since 1902 and has been the subject of various literary treatments. In 2006, the Dutch public selected it as the most beautiful painting in the Netherlands.
