Every year since 1988 an invitation has been sent out across India inviting young people to turn their hearts and minds to ideas that could change their lives – and the world.

And each year – in commemoration of the UN International Day of Youth – several hundreds of thousands of India’s youth respond by drafting an essay on a theme related to their personal development and the fate of the planet:

A soul at peace with itself makes peace possible in the world

The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it

There is a wisdom of the head and a wisdom of the heart

This annual essay-writing project is sponsored by the Shri Ram Chandra Mission, in partnership with the United Nations Information Centre for India and Bhutan (UNIC) and the Heartfulness Education Trust.

When we used the word “heart” we tend to be referring to something that is meaningful, virtuous, and positive. ... I define heartfulness as the following: Taking meaningful action using your character strengths and virtues for the common good. It is mindfulness that catalyzes our heartfulness.
