Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was an Indian social reformer and an Indian educator. He gave a lot of effort to make Bengali prose simple. He made the Bengali alphabets simple for the children.

He was also recognised as the “father of Bengali prose”. He promoted widow remarriage and passed a Widow Remarriage Act in 1856. He received the title “Vidyasagar” from Sanskrit College in Calcutta, the title means, “Ocean of Knowledge” (Vidya means knowledge and Sagar means ocean).
