Education in Sikkim – Sikkim is the northeastern state which is the least populous and second smallest state of India. As per the census 2011, the literacy rate in Sikkim is 82.2%. In 2001 Sikkim stood at 17th position in case of literacy whereas in 2011 Sikkim jumped to 13th position. The literacy rate os male population (both urban and rural) is 87.29%. On the other hand, the literacy rate of females in Sikkim (both urban and rural) is 76.43%.
According to the official website of Sikkim Government, there are over 1300 schools in Sikkim operating at lower primary, primary, upper primary, secondary and senior secondary levels. In the sixth ‘State of States’ report 2008, Sikkim was ranked at top position for rendering excellent services in the field of primary education. The scheme of Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan was launched from 2009-10 for achieving Universal HopeSecondary Education in the country and subsequently in Sikkim.
Until, 1994, there were only three colleges in Sikkim – Sikkim Government College, Tadong, Sikkim Government Law College, Burtuk and Sikkim Institute of Nyingma Higher Studies at Deorali. Now the state boasts of one central university, one state university, 10 government Colleges, four private universities and four private colleges.
