गुरु तेगबहादुर जी का जन्म पंजाब के अमृतसर नगर में हुआ था। ये गुरु हरगोविन्द जी के पाँचवें पुत्र थे। आठवें गुरु इनके पोते 'हरिकृष्ण राय' जी की अकाल मृत्यु हो जाने के कारण जनमत द्वारा ये नवम गुरु बनाए गए। इन्होंने आनन्दपुर साहिब का निर्माण कराया और ये वहीं रहने लगे थे ।
