Ishwar Chadra Vidyasagar was born Ishwar Chandra Bandyopadhyay on 26 September 1820 at Birsingha village to a Bengali Hindu family. He is known for his work as a philosopher, an academic educator, writer, translator as well as a reformer and philatropist. He is also largely responsible for the simplification of the Bengali alphabet and type.
