They circle the globe or run from east to west

The mid or central latitude is the Equator. It is 00 latitude. It divides the earth into parts North & South called Hemispheres.  

The part of the earth above the equator is called the northern hemisphere while that below the equator is called the southern hemisphere.

Latitudes therefore measure the distance of the earth north or south of the equator.

There are 90 latitudes in each hemisphere.  

Therefore, there are 181 latitudes altogether on the globe.

Latitudes are at a constant distance from each other. They never meet anywhere on the globe. Thus, they are called parallels of latitude.
