The position an organism occupies on the food web is called the trophic level. A food chain refers to a succession of organisms which are eating other organism and that are eaten by themselves. Trophic level is a measurement which starts from the chain and reaches up to trophic level. Food chains start at trophic level one with primary producers such as plants, then the second level is herbivores, third level is the predators and top level are the carnivores or predators at level four or five.
