Wives of Shivaji
Before we come to the answer to the topic of Shivaji’s wives, let us understand that (unlike as in the present times) this topic has LEAST importance in the life and times of Shivaji and also many of his contemporaries. His wives (other than Saibai and Soyarabai) had mostly nominal existence as a part of the ‘married life’ of Shivaji. I am venturing to answer this question due to the considerable interest being shown by the poeple on this topic (though I fail to understand why). I am a big fan of Shivaji (for reasons much more than his bravery and battles) and have extensively researched on him for my personal quest.
The marriages in the ruling families were more done out of political expediency than out of love. The level of trust between different competing families was very low. High level of suspicion prevailed. Only two class existed – friend or foe. The best way to forge political alliances was to have marital relationsips within two families. This aspect of political expedience as a motive for marriage is seen very prominently in Mughal empire. Shivaji was no exception to this practice. His wives were from political class. Probably this was the reason there is not much of any historical record of the date of marriage of Shiavji’s some of the wives. It is also interesting to note that at Shivaji’s first marriage to Saibai, both his father Shahaji as well as his two brothers did not attend the ceremony.
