Q1. Read the passage given below.
1. Old age is a delicate phase of life. India is, at present, home to over 95 million people over
the age of 60, and another 80 million are expected to be included in the same age-slot by
2025. The apparent enhancement of living conditions and improved healthcare, besides
awareness, has increased life expectancy. However, the growing cases of desertion and
abuse of the elderly are not only a matter of concern, but also alarming.
2 Life in the twilight years does not come with many opportunities and choices. The
comforts in later years of life, to a large extent, depend on the choices one has made
while young. Social, emotional and financial deprivations are the primary constraints
which hold the aged back. The feeling of being dependent on others, and not being
given due importance, adds to their distress.
3. But it is not all downhill. Looking at the other end of the spectrum, there are a large
number of elderly people who have challenged status quo and have stepped out of
their comfort zone to enrich the lives of others. It is said if one has struck the right
balance, in terms of career and life, has invested well in human relations and retirement
planning, there is nothing such as old-age woes. The buzzword is “ planning". It is vital
to embrace the latter years, with just as much vigour and vibrancy as youth. Some ways
to achieve this are:
Just for them
4. Some organisations have created new milestones in old-age care. They have changed
the lives of many aged people across the nation and helped them rediscover their self-
worth. HelpAge India, Agewell Foundation, Dignity Foundation, and International
Longevity Centre, etc, are established names in elderly care. Oldage Solution is a
web portal started by the Ministry of Science and Technology to think of innovative
technology solutions to serve the old. These organisations work on holistic fronts and
help improve the quality of life through various schemes like providing free ration,
medicines, counselling and healthcare.
