Bolting is a survival mechanism in a plant. It is the elongation of flowering stem before the crop is harvested to produce seeds. This helps in increased reproduction. Crops like lettuce, basil, onion, etc are usually bolted. It is induced by artificial treatment with plant hormone gibberellin .
